Building Bridges

Building Bridges is a peer support organisation set up and run by a group of local Mums. We have the backing of St. Paul’s Church and work in line with their supervision and guidelines.

We have now been running for just over two years and despite members having babies at various times we have continued to deliver this support. Our aim is to support other mums who are new to the area or feeling isolated (a place we can all associate with!), and to have up to date information of toddler groups, drop in sessions and other pre-school activities, ensuring that they can be sure of a friendly welcome. Mums either contact us directly, or can be referred by their Health Visitor or Midwife. Referral rates are not high, and the phone can go for weeks without ringing, but when a mum does call us, we can usually help and we remain in contact for months if not years.

Through our work we have also developed some strong links with other churches and organisations delivering services for under 5s in Letchworth. Our first inter-denominational prayer meeting takes place at the end of April (see calendar) – particularly focusing on the work the churches in Letchworth are doing with families with young children (under 5s).

We have a small budget given to us by our local Children’s Centre, but we are also blessed with support from St Paul’s with our printing and copying needs. We have held two annual “Family Fun Days” so far, but we decided last year to place the responsibility for organising such events and information giving services with the new Children’s Centres.

Because we offer peer support, our members have to be committed to attending toddler groups during the week with their own children. However, your support in prayer is very important and welcomed.
